HUMIDIFICATION AND FLATTENING

large SCALE works

This large scale print (90 x 90 cm approx.) exhibited cockling, creating distracting shadows and a 'rippling' effect across the surface of the paper.

A common phenomenon with reactive modern papers, such deformations are commonly caused by fluctuations in environmental temperature and humidity.

This was able to be rectified by lightly humidifying the work with water vapour to relax the paper fibres and then gently pressing under weight for some time.

In this way the flat plane of the paper could be restored and the work framed and enjoyed without any distracting deformations to the paper.
